Notable Facts
Successfully transformed a 1990 Mazda Miata with a 3.9L Cummins 4BT diesel engine, achieving a unique blend of power and agility, and raising over $4,000 for charity.
The Cummins Miata project, a brainchild of Pistonhead Productions, is a remarkable fusion of a classic 1990 Mazda Miata with a robust 3.9L Cummins 4BT diesel engine. This innovative build, led by Jacob Gettins, transformed the Miata, known for its lightweight and agile nature, into a diesel-powered drift machine. The project involved fitting the significantly heavier Cummins engine into the Miata's compact engine bay, a feat that required extensive customization and engineering prowess.
Key modifications included a custom-fabricated engine cradle, a trunk-mounted radiator system, and a reconfigured fuel cell to maintain the car's balance. The suspension was upgraded with Eibach racing springs and Koni struts to handle the added weight and power. The drivetrain features a Ford ZF5 transmission, an EXEDY stage 2 Ford Mustang clutch, and a Ford 8.8-inch rear differential, carefully selected for compatibility with both the Cummins engine and the MX-5 chassis.
Beyond its technical achievements, the Cummins Miata project was also a charity initiative. Aimed at inspiring a new generation of automotive enthusiasts, the build was completed within a challenging 48-hour timeframe and succeeded in raising funds for a local high school's automotive shop program. The project culminated in the Miata touring North America, participating in various drift events, and ultimately being raffled off to a lucky winner.
Jacob Gettins describes the project as "more than the sum of its parts," emphasizing its role in uniting the community, team spirit, and a shared passion for automotive innovation. The Cummins Miata stands as a testament to creative engineering and the power of collaborative effort in the automotive world.
